Ok, the poll is closed!

Here are the results, interpret them as you will.

I believe I've responded to everyone who included questions in
with the survey (not that I had answers for everything though).
If not, I apologize for the oversight. Send me your question
part again and I'll do my best to get back with you before I hop
a plane for IPROF tomorrow!

Regards,
Michael L Gueterman

Informal Samba/iX Poll #1
Conducted February 19 through February 28, 1997 via HP3000-L

1. At what stage are you at currently with Samba/iX: (total responding: 41)
a) No plans at this time - 2
b) Do not intend on installing it - 0
c) Intend on installing it later - 22
d) In the process of installing it - 5
e) Installed and testing - 12

2. Do you foresee Samba/iX becoming part of your environment? (total responding: 40)
a) Yes - 38
b) No - 2

3. Would you prefer (and purchase) a "supported" product over
SAMBA/iX (either from HP or a third party)? (total responding: 37)
a) Yes - HP Only - 5
b) Yes - HP or Third Party - 13
c) No - 19

4. How would you rate the 'ease' of installation: (total responding: 12)
a) Lot's of problems, it's still not fully working - 4
b) Lot's of problems, but it's now fully working - 0
c) Some problems - 8
d) No problems - 0

5. If the answer to #4 is a), what isn't working that you know should be?
(The following are from the four respondents still having trouble)

Windows NT appears to work correctly, but when using WIN95, the
system and shares are 'browsable', but errors occur when either trying
to connect to a session protected by a password, or when attempting any
form of file manipulation (open, delete, etc).
   --
Windows NT working fine, but receiving a 'Network is busy' error for
    Win 95 clients.
   --
    Still testing an older revision.
   --
Receiving a DOS Error 53 when doing a NET VIEW \\servername

Any additional comments you'd like to add, things you want to see, etc?
(I've simply copied the various comments made by people and combined them below)

Better (MPE-oriented) smb.conf with working MPE logon user.acct/share,
and Windows side setup guide.
--
It would be *real* useful to have a PC program that could be used to
test the Samba/iX installation, without being susceptible to Win95 and
WinNT buggy networking software. E.g., a program that tries the "normal"
Win networking ... but if it fails, it would use IP address to get
directly to the 3000's samba port for testing.
--
regarding support and purchasing - would much perfer that the product be
included as part of the mpe/ix fos. much easier to get funds for mpe support vs
having to purchase an outside product and then subsequent support fees.
--
I'd like to see some sort of "log on" security added, or at least the
ability to restrict access by ip address, but I don't think that's
part of the porting effort (and for all I know, it already has it and
I just haven't RTFM yet).
--
any way to have resource sharing and Samba coexist?
--
This is going to be great!
--
I would love to see this tied into the NT domain. Right now we are
moving towards a large NT infracstructure (> 3000 nodes). Having a
logon on the machine ofr each user is not workable. Using a public
share is what we will have to use for now but would like to see it tied
to the domain logon. Supposedly it can validate, any way to have it
use the validation from a PDC and grant accesses based on the 'token'??
Otherwise a VERY promising product!!!! Looking forward to the next version

It sounds like a good approach to exploiting the strengths of the 3K. Now
if the news could start hitting the trade rags our managers read . . . :)
--
The only problem we are having is with browsing. When I try to browse
from WIN95 clients some of the clients are able to browse while others
are not. It does not happen to the same client all of the time. It may
have something to do with the fact that we are a WINDOWS NT network with
out a WINS Server. The master browser on the Domain where the samba
machine resides keeps reporting that the samba machine is attempting to
take over the domain. I have wins support = no, but it may be ignoring
this line since I have edited the file on both notepad and with vi.
Testing continues, but I ahve to get this working it is critical to my
operation since HP isn't supporting Resource Sharing. We would be very
interested in purchasing support.

Comments - Samba will make a much needed improvement to HP3000
Integration services. We will be testing Samba with WfWG, Win95, and
WinNT clients. Also we will be testing Macintosh clients using a
product called DAVE from Thursby software that allows Macs to access
SMB servers natively. And we will be testing Samba with Microsoft's
Distributed File System on a Windows NT 4.0 Server.
--
I've downloaded Samba/iX and looked at the installation. It looks quite
complicated for us non-Unix types. Maybe if looked simpler I'd have done
it already and maybe my answer to question 3 above would be different.
--
I'd like to have the following things:
- a working version of the Samba-Client on the 3k (current version hangs
after establishing a connection)
- coexistance between HPs ResourceSharing and Samba (both occupy port
139). This would avoid the need of copying thousands of files from
RS-drives to Samba-Shares.
--
We have used Samba on our SPARC server for 2 years now, but
not yet on the HP3000. I just have not got around to it yet.
--
Sounds like a great product; I am really looking forward to finding the
time to look at it.
--
I agree with whoever wrote requesting a checklist. I'm not very adept
at networking issues and less so from the PC perspective - Domains and
workgroups, netbios and lmhosts files - I am unclear as to my options
given my current setups on the 9000, 3000, NT, WFW, 3.1, etc.
