Hello All,

Considering the emails I received were running about 10 to 1 *for*
implementing a filtering mechanism, I made a few changes and the new
code went into place around 3pm CDT today.

Along with their respective Yes/No answers, several people made
some suggestions on how to make the filter a little smarter or
more "friendly". I appreciate all of the suggestions. Here is
what I put into place:

1. No change to the existing HP3000-L to comp.sys.hp.mpe posting
   mechanism was made.

2. For messages originating on comp.sys.hp.mpe, I check if they
were posted to more than one newsgroup. If so, I check to see
if all of the newsgroups posted to belong to a list of "Valid
Newsgroups" (currently only comp.sys.hp.mpe and comp.sys.hp.hpux).
If I find a newsgroup not in the valid list, the message is
   *not* forwarded onto HP3000-L.

I chose to implement a list of Valid Newsgroups as it gives us
a little more flexibility in the future. I included comp.sys.hp.hpux
in that list as I felt that there would be legit instances where
a person might ask a migration related question and post it to both
newsgroups. If this turns out to be a wrong assumption on my part
and HP3000-L starts getting slammed by bogus messages posted to
both newsgroups, then I'll remove it from the list.

I also did not include any headers or footers advertising the
services of Easy Does It Technologies LLC in each gated message
(although Ken Sletten seemed to think it appropriate :). I'd be
more than happy to take another poll on that issue though ;)

Anyway, it's done and hopefully that will be the end of
the cross posted flame-fest between the ex-Compaq and SUN camps,
at least on HP3000-L.

Respectfully,
Michael L Gueterman
