Thanks for the quick response and the resolution.  I have a call into Summit
to see if this patch is included on any upcoming patchsets (read as: I don't
load patches on my production box until they say to do so); and in the
meantime, the workaround will do.

Once I started to receive responses, I knew why this problem sounded so
familiar.  I have not updated all the systems I work on to 6.X, and this is
not a problem in 5.5.  I had forgotten about it, but just now looked and
found a note to myself in my "things to watch out for in 6.X" folder.
