Yes, WordPad silently added a CR to your first line by using
the DOS convention of CR+LF for line delimiters. On the Posix
side, the LF is the delimiter and the CR a "garbage character"
that makes the /PERL/PUB/perl "unusable".

What's wrong with PFE? You mentioned Samba/iX, so PFE edits 3000 files.
And PFE is clever enough to detect whether a file uses CR+LF or LF only
as line delimiter. It offers this DOS or Unix mode as default when you
save your modified file.

If you don't like PFE or prefer something that has syntax coloring for
various programming languages, HTML etc, you might want to try Proton
by Uli Meybohm (www.meybohm.de) -- however, you'd better speak a little
bit German to read menus and help text ;-)
