Well, we have connected RF bar code scanners to the HP3000. We used a
local firm that supposedly had HP3000 experience. While the system
works we are looking for better ways of doing this. The way the
system works today is that the bar code scanners each have their own
IP address. They actually talk to an NT server running some kind
of communications software that talks to the scanners and passes the
info on to an HP3000 session under the control of the NT server.
The HP3000 session is running a character mode app that we wrote
in house. The third-party firm that did this for us said that it
works better with a VPlus app rather than character mode, but we
didn't feel like rewriting the character mode app to VPlus just for
use by the RF scanners.
The problems we're having is that every change in the HP3000 app must
be reproduced on the NT server app that controls the scanners. Other
than that, it works well.
The company we used is:

I know there is another company that does this kind of thing, but I
don't have the contact info handy. However you do it, be sure and
bring your check book. The system we have cost us around $35K, and
that's just for three RF units.
