Indeed they do!  ;-)

They try to here in the States as well, but the audience is less than
receptive.

I remember standing at a WWII memorial in Victoria in 1974, overhearing the
puzzlement of (what I presumed to be) an American (yeah, I know... really a
Yank...) over the date on the plaque.  He seemed fairly certain that Pearl
Harbor, the start of WWII, was in 1941, not 1939, and was genuinely
surprised to learn the cause of his confusion, and the accuracy of the
engraving.

I would be surprised today to come across someone with enough historical
knowledge to even make his error.
