> The first two men get to eat 3.6% of the food The third and

> 14.8% of the food The seventh and eighth eat 23% of the food
> The last two eat 49.6%

Except this restaurant story does not reflect all of life, the universe, and
everything. It only reflects what each pays in taxes, and gets in return
from the federal feeding trough. The last two do not get 49.6% of free
exercise of religion, press, or speech, or get to bear 49.6% of arms, nor
are they free from 49.6% of unlawful searches and seizures. They do not use
49.6% of our common defense or public facilities. You might be able to make
a case that they do somehow enjoy more those freedoms and entitlements their
tax dollars go to pay, but they do not get nearly half of them.

I hope someone more aware of these numbers can refute them, as I can only
complain that they do not "sound right". I'm pretty sure that I'm neither of
those last two guys, but I expect to benefit some from the federal tax cuts
(no, I haven't done my taxes, yet).

        PERFORM TANGENTIAL-DIGRESSION.
I only wish the Commonwealth of Massachusetts would take the hint, and
enforce the voter-mandated repeal of the expired temporary income tax
increase, and reinstitute the charitable deductions, and give me as a
homeowner at least the tax deduction they give those who rent, since I pay
more in state taxes than I do in federal. I would call Senator Kerry's
office, but I can think of three reasons why that wouldn't do me any good.
The first reason is that as a U.S. Senator he has little sway on the state
tax rates, although he was once our Lieutenant Governor, under Mike Dukakis.
We sure do miss 'em both.
