Dear Randy,

The error you're getting from Dbaudit is that it is expecting a pattern 
in this case.

SELECT  FIELD * * CUSTGRP-PB-SITEM(1,1,1) < " "

You might want to try and specify the first byte of the field.

I could not find a way to specify specific decimal equivalents, but possibly the above will help narrow it down.
