If your going to buy DAT get the new DDS2 drives they are at (as would
sem logical) twice as fast as the previous drives, however they are still
painfully slow!. Before you buy checkout DLT drives the "Backup media of
the future", a DLT (Digital Linear Tape) will store 20 GB on one tape, 40
gb with 2 - 1 compression wich seems the norm and they are FAST!. I was
at a demo, (a company already using the technology) a 26 minute "store"
took 8 minutes!. I recently talked to ORBIT who stated that they plan to
offer a DLT service, OEM drive, software AND support and are looking at
supporting 4 to 1 compression, 80 gb on one tape!.
