I think the issue is the period after the S. If the S stood for something,
e.g. Sergei, then it is an abbreviation and should have a period. If as
other times stated it stood for nothing i.e. his whole middle name was S
then there should be no period.

It's clear that I am getting very dense, but I'll be damned (Harry S.
Truman-speak) if I can see what's wrong with the spelling of "Harry S.
Truman." It's the same way he spelled it (see, e.g.,
http://www.sandia.gov/Truman.htm), and by God, if anyone should know how to
spell his own name, it's Harry!
