You are NOT alone!

I'm still trying to get the Sparks Fire Department to quit using HP Slate.

To convert the files I have them go onto the Utility Screen and then Convert
to Edit3000. We then transfer them through Reflection to the PC and bring
them up in WordPerfect.  They are a mess, but they don't have to be
re-typed.  The soft reset started when we moved to MPE5.5 and that caused
most everyone (but our Fire Dept) to get rid of their old documentation and
move into the 90's.  I don't know of a way to do it automaticaly or if I did
I have forgotten.
