speaking of  terminal batteries..... 26xx terminals  used mercury  
batteries  as I remember  and  when they get fuzzy that   fuzz is  quite toxic. Ed

The baud  rate on your console may have defaulted to 2400 (if it also lost 
battery), up  it to 9600 and see if you still get garbage.

This is presuming you're  using an old dumb terminal.  If a 2392 it would 
need a pair of N size  batteries in the back.  If they have been there a long 
time they may have  turned to white fuzz.
