My response won't be precisely an answer to your question, but you may find
it interesting nonetheless. We manufacture an emailer, CUSoon, with elaborate
merge capabilities, designed for wholly in-house use in a completely hands-off,
automatic manner. The internal engine for CUSoon was taken from our report
writer, QueryCalc.

CUSoon was designed to greatly increase an organization's customer relations
at a very low cost. It was meant to basically convert a standard commercial
organization into a second Amazon.com, where the customer is kept up to date
regarding the status of every order.

Although CUSoon runs on a PC, it derives its information from a host and
works as well against MPE as it does UNIX, Linux or Windows-based databases.
