I recently had another rash of mail bounces related to HP3000-L (and other
lists) flooding my mailbox. Previously I've tried being as lenient as
possible, allowing for network errors, configurations changes, mail routing
changes, etc., but there comes a point where I have to remove the user.
However, I am CHANGING this policy (hopefully for the benefit of all).

Also, some users are reporting that their mail to HP3000-L is bouncing. If
the bounce message truly says it was undeliverable to [log in to unmask],
you ARE having trouble reaching us. But in many cases, that is not the
problem.

Mail bounces resulting from trying to deliver to list subscribers SHOULD be
returned to owner-hp3000-l (me) by RFC-compliant mailers. However, there
are mailers out there that will bounce these to the original person that
made a posting (whether to Listserv or usenet). If you receive any of these,
forward them to me and I'll put them in my list of "questionable" addresses.

In the event of transient errors that persist (undeliverable after x days,
will continue for y days, mailbox full, disk quota exceeded, device full,
can't open dead.letter, etc) I will be setting the offending address to
the DIGEST delivery mode, where a cumulative digest of a day's postings are
mailed once a day. That reduces the load on my mailbox plus allows me to
wait longer before deleting a user from the list.

So... should you suddenly start receiving digests, you can simply set your
delivery options back to MAIL.

While I'm on the subject, a quick reminder how do set list options:

Send mail to <[log in to unmask]> with the following text:

   SET HP3000-L <option>

Relevant options include:

ACK|NOACK - ACK causes an acknowledgement to be returned when you submit
mail to hp3000-l. NOACK is the default.
REPRO|NOREPRO - Causes a copy of your own mailings to be returned to you.
                   NOREPRO is the default.
MAIL|DIGEST|INDEX|NOMAIL - Delivery options of MAIL (default), DIGEST of
the day's postings send once each day, INDEX
is like DIGEST but only sends subjects, and
NOMAIL stops all mailing but leaves you on the
                              list itself (useful when vacationing)
SHORTHDR|FULLHDR|IEFTHDR|DUALHDR - List Mail header options as follows:
SHORTHDR - Strips all irrelevant headers such as Received: lines.
FULLHDR - Includes all incoming header information (best for MIME)
IETFHDR - Converts headers into Internet IETF standard format
DUALHDR - Copies a SHORTHDR into the message text (useful for mailers
which suppress header information you'd prefer to see)

We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion :-)
