Yes, there is. I dont work for a division so I cant comment on how many of
these have been done but for the most part 800 and 900 Series server have
been convertable back and forth. It mostly concerns a purchase of the license
for the intended OS, some internal changes to the SPU, and some changing and/or
swapping of certain I/O pcas that may be specific to a given platform or OS.
The memory is retained as is most of the I/O pcas.
This activity *requires* an HP CE and cannot be acomplished without.

Technical Data
HP 3000 Computer Systems
Introduction
Hewlett-Packard offers two separate lines of Precision
Architecture Servers based on its industry leading HP
Precision Architecture RISC (PA-RISC) architecture, the
HP 3000 Servers using the MPE/iX operating system and the
HP 9000 Servers using the HP-UX operating system. These
servers range from low cost departmental and work area servers
to high performance enterprise wide mainframe class servers.
Both HP 3000 and HP 9000 Servers feature memory and I/O expansion
capabilities along with a broad offering of disk and optical
storage, tape interchange and backup media as well as printer,
plotter and display devices for presenting information. These
servers feature a range of processor performance, packaging
and user license options which allow you to meet your needs
today yet grow easily in the future.
As their business conditions change, customers may desire to
change or grow their HP 3000 or HP 9000 Servers in a variety
of ways. Many customers want to grow their existing servers
to accommodate more users, in-creased data requirements, higher
levels of availability or perhaps the addition of a server at
a replicated site. Others may wish to supplement their current
applications with new applications. Many times these new
applications need to access data currently stored on other
servers (for example, an HP 9000 application accessing
IMAGE /SQL data on an HP 3000 Server). In other cases customers
may want to convert some or all of their HP 3000 or HP 9000
Servers to HP 9000 or HP 3000 Servers, because of the need for
a new Unix or MPE/iX application. Finally, there are customers
who are relying on their current environments and solutions but
would like the comfort of knowing that in the future, if the
need arises, that they could convert one or more of their HP
3000 or HP 9000 Servers to HP 9000 or HP 3000 Servers.

Hewlett-Packard offers a number of products that help customers
protect their current server investments. These include memory
and I/O slot upgrades, additional I/O cards, additional
peripherals, high availability products, user level increases,
and add-on software products. The HP 3000 Server to HP 9000
Server Hardware Conversion Kits discussed under Technical
Specification provide the abili-ty to convert HP 3000 MPE/iX
based servers to HP 9000 HP-UX based servers at a price that
is lower than the price of a new Unix server. For information
on converting an existing HP 9000 Server to an HP 3000 Server,
please contact your local HP sales representative.
HP 3000 and HP 9000 Server Conversion Considerations
An HP 3000 to HP 9000 or an HP 9000 to HP 3000 conversion
requires a lot more than simply converting the hardware
(see Figure 1). Anytime a business requirement dictates such
a conversion, a number of areas need to be evaluated with
detailed conversion plans developed. These areas of evaluation
include applications (customer and third party); legacy data;
operations, programmer and end user training; system management
tools; and hardware (server, peripherals and cabling). Table 1
gives a partial list of questions that should be considered in
planning any conversion. Hewlett-Packard will be offering an
Investment Protection White Paper, P/N 5964-8997E in the third
quarter of 1996, which can aid in this planning. In addition,
Hewlett-Packard and third parties can provide assistance in this
planning effort. Contact your local HP sales representative for
more information.
Technical Specification
The HP 3000 Server to HP 9000 Server Hardware Conversion Kits
support four families of servers (see Table 2 for details):
* 9x7 to F/G/I-Class Servers
* 9x8 to E-Class Servers
* 9x9KS to K-Class Servers
* 99x to T-Class Servers
Table 1. Questions to be asked when planning a server conversion.
* Are existing applications and data base environments expected
to be ported onto the new environment or will new applications
and data base environments be developed and/or acquired?
* Will data collected and stored on the original server (i.e.,
sales histories, customer profiles, warranty data, etc.) be
required to be accessible on the new server?
* If yes, will this be accomplished via porting the data to the
new server or will an old server remain in the network,
allowing applications on the converted servers to remotely
access this data?
* What operational tools or processes previously used in the
old environment for managing that server will be required in
the new environment?
* Which of these tools are provided with the new operating
system and which need to be acquired from HP or its software
partners?
* What hardware changes need to be made?
* Is more processing power or memory required because of
differing applications?
* Will all the peripherals, networks and associated cabling
used on the old server work on the new server?
* Are more peripherals required because of rewritten
or new applications?
* What training will be needed for operational and programming
staffs and for the application end users to insure that the new
environment can be efficiently managed and used from day one?
In all cases except for the 99x to T-Class Servers, conversions
result in a corresponding HP 9000 Server (or the next higher
performing HP 9000 server if there is no corresponding HP 9000
Server). In the case of the 99x to T-Class Servers, all
conversions are made to the T520 Server. For information on HP
9000 to HP 3000 Server Hard-ware Conversion Kits, contact your
local HP sales representative.
The HP 3000 Server to HP 9000 Server Hardware Conversion Kits
include the following items (not all kits include every item):
* PA-RISC Processor Card(s)
* HP-UX Compatible Core I/O Card
(Multi-Function I/O Card). This card will support several of
the following features (varies depend-ing on platform):
- Fast/wide differential SCSI-2 I/O
- Single ended SCSI-2 I/O
- On-board modem for remote support
- RS-232 ports for console, terminals, remote support
and UPS control
* PA-RISC firmware and stable store changes
* Appropriate HP 9000 nameplates and platform labels
* Two user license for HP-UX
operating system
* HP-UX operating system software and core documentation
* HP installation
* One year warranty on modified parts
For specifications on HP 9000 Servers, refer to the appropriate
HP 9000 Server data sheet (see Table 3).
Standard HP 9000 upgrade products exist that can be used to
add more processors (to a multi-processor server); to upgrade
to a higher performing processor; to add more memory, I/O
slots, I/O cards or peripherals; and to increase the HP-UX
user license level.
Not all I/O cards, peripherals, networking and software
products supported on the HP 3000 Servers are supported on the
HP 9000 Servers. The HP 9000 Servers Ordering Guide and the HP
9000 Configuration Guide identify all products that are
supported on HP 9000 Servers. These documents should be
consulted in association with your local HP sales
representative to determine which products included with your
HP 3000 Server can also be supported on your converted
HP 9000 Server.
Since performance is very application, operating system and
work load dependent, no guarantees are made as to the relative
performance between the original HP 3000 Server and the converted
to HP 9000 Server. If additional performance is required on these
converted HP 9000 Servers, processor, memory and I/O upgrades are
available as HP 9000 add-on products. User level licenses are a
function of the operating system and the data base; no credits
are given for user level licenses previously purchased on the
MPE/iX \ operating system or for the IMAGE/SQL and the
ALLBASE/ SQL data bases.
Hardware conversion kits are not provided by Hewlett-Packard
for older HP 3000 or HP 9000 servers since most of these
servers have either completed or are near completion of their
final 5 year support lifetime. Hewlett-Packard offers
attractive programs for customers who wish to upgrade these
older HP 3000 and HP 9000 servers for newer servers.
Installation and Support
The HP 3000 Servers to HP 9000 Servers Hardware Conversion Kits
include installation by HP personnel. This covers the
installation of any conversion hardware and firmware and the
loading of the basic HP-UX operating system. Any changed
hardware and/or firmware components are covered under a
standard HP one year warranty. Unmodified hardware and/or
firmware components will be covered under their original
warranty.
In some cases, the servers being converted to have entered
their guaranteed minimum support life (see Table 3). HP may
sell conversion kits for these servers during this period.
However, the guaranteed minimum support life of the HP 9000
Server will not be extended.
HP 3000 Server and software support contracts will be
terminated on the day of conversion with credit given for any
unused portions of the contracts. New HP 9000 Server and
software support contracts will be offered to the customer on
the converted HP 9000 Server. The customer is strongly
encouraged to include a CD-ROM disk drive on their HP 9000
Server for software distribution and updates.
