Can one use stdio.h functions (fopen / fprintf / fclose) to write to a
MSG file?

This raises other issues of netiquette. These strike me as newbie
questions, although being less than a newbie to gcc, how would I know
what is and isn't? Should I be forwarding these to the list? Should I
have our C programmer send them directly? Should we keep them off of the
list? Are there sympathetic souls out there who have been here, done
this, and would be willing to help via private email?
