Tom,

DTCs can be managed one of two ways, host based, via the NMMGR on the
e3000, and PC based, via an OpenmView workstation running the DTC MGR
module. DTCs don't store their own configuration. So, when the power is
reset the DTC sends out a broadcast message seeking its configuration. The
e3000 or OpenView workstation will see the broadcast and begin the download
of the configuration (port profiles) into the DTC.

As far as A & N Class Servers, you can still do host based DTC management,
just like you've done in the past. I have several clients that have
upgraded to these newer servers and they continue to use their DTCs just
like before without adding an OpenView workstation. The difference is that
you previously had a chunk of coax cable that connected the DTCs to the
e3000. The A & N Class servers don't have a BNC connector so you can't
connect the coax directly to it. So, the A & N Class Servers connect to the
network, via Cat-5 cable, and your DTCs have to connect to the network as
well, either via the coax or an transceiver, depending on your network
equipment.

Thanx,

Subject: [HP3000-L] DTC's and A/N Series

I've read that if you are going to one of the new computers and you are
using DTCs,
that you have to connect the DTC to your network, since the newer boxes
don't manage
DTCs anymore. That begs a question.

Whenever the power is reset on the DTCs, the HP always downloads some
information
to the DTCs. What exactly does that do? And what will replace that if the HP
is not
managing the DTC any longer? TIA
