Walter,

My first job out of college, circa 1982, I worked from Union Oil Company, Chicago Refinery.  We also had a payroll system written in Fortran.  The data files were in binary to save space.  All years were written with two digits.

Since the binary files were, well binary, we could not read them, we had a program that would read the binary files and produce ASCII output.

It makes me laugh when I see XML files.
