Hi Vicki - ODBC is a published standard from Microsoft which specifies a
common database interface. The current version is 2.0 ... reading ahead
the draft 3.0 spec starts out with this:

" Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) is a widely accepted application
programming interface (API) for database access. It is based on the
Call-Level Interface (CLI) specifications from X/Open and ISO/IEC for
database APIs and uses Structured Query Language (SQL) as its database
access language."

There are good books on the topic from QUE books and Microsoft books, If
you need ISBNs I will be happy to provide them.

<Plug> We have been building an ODBC driver as part of our DataExpress
product for the past 2 years. If access to data from terminal, PC or MAC
desktops is what you need DataExpress is the product in the HP3000 market.
We have recently ported it to the HP9000 as well for use with Oracle and
AllBase.

A brief summary of features is as follows:

DataExpress is the premier data extraction tool in the HP3000 community.
It's feature set includes the following:
- data input from Image, Allbase, KSAM, MPE flat files or combinations
- data catalogs from Cognos and HP as well as our own utilities
- output to many formats including reports, Lotus-123, Dbase, etc
- ability to define and store procedures with optional run-time parameters
- comprehensive "user profile" capabilities to control who can see what
data
- tight interface to WRQ products

The ODBCLink option includes the following features:
- 32bit drivers delivering NOW!
- read and write access to data with specified security
- TurboImage without Image/SQL (ie uses TurboImage intrinsics directly)
- TPI support in native TurboImage
- Allbase and Image/SQL
- KSAM and MPE Flat files
- simple data dictionary facility for KSAM and MPE Flat files
- Cognos PDL dictionary support
- interfaces to Impromptu, MS Access, Powerbuilder, MS Excel and many
others
- supports serial link (hard-wired plus modem connections)
- supports winsock connections via lan
- supports serial or lan connection via WRQ PPL

For more information or to discuss how these tools could help you solve
your
data accessing problems, contact M.B. Foster at 613-448-2333.
