Larry Boyd wrote an excellent reply about the government "meddling"
in air safety, but I was thinking more along the lines of health care
and government programs for the indigent and poor. Prior to, oh,
around 1900 in the USofA, private charities (such as churches and
other non-profits) handled most of the medical care and such for
the poor. Since FDR and more recently, LBJ with his Great Society,
the Federal government has stepped in and become the Sugar Daddy for
every disadvantaged person. While I have no doubt that the truly
needy are receiving the medical care and help they need (and
probably didn't receive before), we also didn't have people
making a career (and in some cases a multi-generational career)
out of being on assistance when the assistance was handled by
private charities.
Given our government's dismal track record of running up huge
deficits and huger bureaucracies to deal with everything, I
was really worried when they (the Clintons) wanted to meddle
in health care. Socialism, here we come!
As I hope you realize, this is 100% my opinion!
