I have been very hesitant in giving any technical advice on the forum -
given the number of HP3000 heavy weights on this list.
However today - for the first time in 2 years - our 917 gave a fault code -
it shut down; i.e., you couldn't get a prompt.
A call to HP response center - gads, I'm going to miss them when all of our
system is off maintenance - they are the Mercedes-Benz of support IMO - but
after a conference call with hardware support and software it was felt that
this fault was a memory error glitch.
Bottom line -- hardware advised me to place my boards in a manner contrary
to "rational" (since when was computer fault diagnosis "rational") thought.
Look at your slots - and start from the **end** not the beginning - place
your highest density memory boards first. I have 2 64mb and 2 32 mb - so the
64 mb go in the last 2 slots followed by the 2 32 mb.
I don't know whether this advice applies to the later 9X8 and 9x9 boxes;
from the tone of the conversation (with an old time HP guy) I suspect it
does -
Anyway so far so good -
