As far as I know, there is no way to auto-forward a private message.
This was by design to prevent truly private messages from being
routed to someone else during vacations, etc. I've had the same
problem for a while since I maintain multiple addresses (with one
of them being on HPDesk), and would rather them all funnel down
to one. Even with autoforward on, I still have to check for the
private messages.

Subject:  [HP3000-L] hpdesk question

hi~
this is the situation...we're in the process of moving the
company off of hpdesk - so some people are using desk, some
aren't. for the one that aren't using desk anymore, they
been instructed to turn on autoforward (but not delete).
*but* if a message is marked *private* it's not being
autoforwarded. is there a work around for this? maybe
something in mailconfig?                 - d
