In a nearby school system, a HP3000 S/48 was hit by 3 huge power surges
during a thunder storm. The first one blew out the surge protector (I
believe), the second hit the system (still stayed online), and the third
shock finally took the unit down. After 3 hours of attempting to boot
(Cold, Cool, and Warm) the SM was finally able to get the unit up.

I know this may not seem like an 'important' machine, but how much
(theoretically) could my S/42 take on an unprotected circuit?
