What does a 9000 do when fitted with a HP powertrust, and serial connection?
Surely this provides for orderly 'shutdown' of the system? That is, go
through the various run levels from current to shut, terminating processes
as gracefully as they allow?

APCs fitted to Win NT allow for a serial connection, and a service which
monitors the power, and can be configured in various ways to execute a
shutdown. Most modern PC motherboards allow for actual turnoff off of the
power supply on shutdown.

I think that you are asking for hardware and OS features that most vendors
haven't even thought of yet. Gavin had a great proposed syntax for a
:SHUTDOWN command posted here a while ago. Maybe what you want is that
command (wishfully in MPE/iX 8.0) with something like a ";POWEROFF NOW"
option added. Then all you need is some external sensor affair that makes
the command happen.

A great addition to any OS would be the ability to automate critical basic
functions like =SHUTDOWN and have a documented and accessable method of
feeding the OS data to cause such actions. I don't know much yet about SNMP
but it seems to have some means of communicating actions or status between
devices. I know that some APC units have a SNMP connection but what is
actually being sent out?
