This note is not really directed to the list, but odd as it may seem, really
only to the USENET archives. The list is just my way of getting it there, and
for that I apologize in advance. Because of my postings some months back on
the freecolorprinters.com/Phaser 850 offer, I now get one email a week
somewhat identical to the one I just received a few minutes ago and I have
attached below.

If these emails weren't getting to be so common, I would never waste the
bandwidth of the entire list, and I absolutely don't want to be impolite to
anyone, but truth be told, I don't have the time to keep answering these
sorts of inquiries.

My suggestion is: ask for free samples from each of the color printer vendors
and make the comparisons yourself. Color is extremely subjective to begin
with. Personally I'm pleased with all of the color printers we have. They all
have weaknesses, but they also all their own strengths, and we use them
selectively for whatever tasks they're best suited.

The questionnaire I just received, which has been typical, is enclosed below.
The trouble is that it doesn't take just a minute to answer these sorts of
questions intelligently; it takes 30 or 45 minutes for me to do even a
moderately fair job, and that unfortunately is becoming a burden.

=======================================

I read your posted on USENET (a little dated) about your purchase of the
Phaser 850 through the freecolorprinters.com program. If you have a minute
I would like to ask you a few questions as I will be making a color printer
purchase soon.

1. How durable is the ink? I understand its waterproof, but how easy can it
be scratched off? At what temperature will it melt (can a printed page be
left in a car over 100 F)?
2. Do you have any idea if this would be a safe way of printing to CD label
sheets (to be used as labels for CD-R in CDROM drives)? I hope the heat and
speed of CDROM drives will not cause the ink to come off (hurting the
drive).
3. Do you have experience with the other GOOD color laser (Lexmark c720)
printers? How does this output compare to them (you seemed very pleased in
your post)?
4. How much is a 5 pack of color crayon through freecolorprinters.com? I
hope they don't over price consumables, are they priced competitively?
5. Do you happen to know what the minimum page print qty is to qualify for
the program?
6. Last but not least... I have heard this printer CANNOT be powered down
because the power up process will EAT the ink up quickly. How loud is the
printer when it is idle/standby (subjective I know). What is the power
consumption like in idle/standby ? (I am in Los Angeles, CA and the power
shortage here is going to raise power prices over 100%).

That's off the top of my head. If you have anything else to offer
information wise I'd be happy to hear it. Like I said we will be buying a
color printer very soon. I'm trying to determine whether color laser or the
Phaser 850 is best for our needs (mostly full color/photo prints).
Consumable price is a big consideration; I assume this printer will need to
be serviced less than a color laser (less headaches I'm assuming from a
simpler design. I.E no drum, belt, fuser etc)

If you can answer any of this I'd like to thank you in advance. Please feel
free to point out any erroneous assumptions or other points you would like
to share.
