it sounds to me that you have Vesoft/MPEX on your system?

If so, it's easy to change the file code of any file to a negative number; (%altfile fn;intcode=-400)

this technique is one method of preventing a file from being purged.

If you have MPEX, change the file code to a zero (0) and take a look at it, via the print command or your favorite editor.

I use to do this when I was an operator, at a site in Phoenix, just to confuse the heck out of the system manager. He knew I was the creator of the file but I never told him how I did it. He never did figure it out :)

 Gibson,

Don't know if you got an answer yet but following may do it:

:FILE T=$NULL
:STORE ABC001BD.PUB.DBAS;*T;SHOW;PURGE

MPEX will also PURGE it if you have it.

However, as far as I remember, filecode -400 is for Image database root file
which should normally not be longer than 6 characters, if my memory serves
me well. So, I can't figure why system would have a root file with a 8
chars name ? Maybe a previous rename ?
