Hello All @ 3000-l,

RE: Missed the autoboot: "press any key within 10 seconds".

A friend mentioned that a while back some one out here had a concern
about missing the auto-boot prompt... Well, being a frequent rebooter
(another one of those new computer terms) here are the tricks I use...

For all MPE systems that I have tested... If you are aware you are
going to reboot for an update or other event where you want to respond
to the prompt (plan your work and work your plan) before the system is
taken down you can easily change the autoboot flag...

:blddump.hp36375.telesup
(#1) blddump > autoboot
Autoboot is enabled.
(#2) blddump > autoboot off
Autoboot has been disabled.
(#3) blddump > exit

Don't forget, when you come back up, run "blddump.hp36375.telesup"
again and re-enable the autoboot flag.

--------

Now if you are already down, on some systems here is a trick that may
work for you:

On the NIO 9x7 & 9x8 boxes:

A trick I use is following the CNTRL-B/RS, once I have reached the
point where you start to see TEST #### messages, I perform another
CNTRL-B and get to the CM> prompt and the test #### will continue to
run until test C640 on 9x8 and C440 on 9x7. At that point I type
CO {return} and return quickly {return} several more times which gives
a quick response to the:

9x8: Processor is starting autoboot process.
9x8: To discontinue, press any key within 10 seconds.
or
9x7: Autoboot from primary path enabled.
9x7: To override, press any key within 10 seconds.

... prompt and you now are at the boot prompt:

9x8: Main Menu: Enter command or menu >
... here you would do a "BO PRI" or a "BO ALT"
or
9x7: Boot from primary boot path (Y or N):
... here you would do a Y or N to select primary or alternate

... and then you can respond to the IPL prompt:

Interact with IPL (Y or N)?>

... and you can reply "Y" and perform your START NORECOVER or your
UPDATE...

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry, this does not work for the A/N PCI boxes, the 2nd CNTRL-B
interrupts the boot progress... I do not have test boxes readily
available other than 9x7 and 9x8 so I am not aware if this trick works
for 9x9 or other machines.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope this helps...
