OUCH beyond belief, Bob J. is correct, thanks Bob !!!  

Did get a new Duracell big box battery and replaced it just fine.  Had to cut the steel holder tray just a bit since the battery was a little taller, but everything looks just great.

Now to deal with the DS1287 problem, a total YUK.

That large 6V sealed lead acid battery you describe backs up system memory to allow
power fail recovery. That is NOT the system clock battery. The real time clock battery
in a 9x7 is small and part of an IC package (DS1287). See link below:
