Although we are primarily an HP 3000 shop and intend to stay that way, we use
Lotus Notes on an Intel (486/66) box and will soon replace it with a SUN Sparc
20. We also have HP 9000/800, 9000/700's and next week we will be
implementing a Document Management System (Imaging) using Windows NT and SQL
Server. Furthermore, we use Novell's Netware as our PC file server and for one
of our production applications. It would seem that a heterogenous-networked
environment such as ours, which has become more and more common, will continue
to become increasingly common.

With that preface I have to ask, why is it so important that Lotus Notes become
resident on the HP 3000 platform? The answer probably has something to do with
the reliability, ease of use, security features, etc. that we all know put the
HP 3000 in a class by itself as an application server. That withstanding,
since the use of Lotus Notes requires networked clients, it will only work in
a networked environment. Why not add another server to your network, this one
to serve as a Lotus Notes server? We do and we like it.

We are sucessfully integrating applications resident on the HP 3000 with Lotus
Notes applications. Moreover, given our acceptance of the heterogeneous,
networked computing model, we are probably not as concerned as some about
having all of our applications resident on the HP 3000. However, in all
fairness, if Lotus Notes were made available on the HP 3000 we just might
switch to that environment. In the meantime we are able to enjoy the benefits
of Notes by using a seperate networked server.
