This is very curious indeed. I suspect MIRVOL comes with disc mirroring.
CONTIGVOL should be available in VOLUTIL, whether or not you have
disc mirroring.

For example, on my test system, running MPE/iX 6.5, I get:

TEST:volutil

 Mirvutil A.01.00, (C) Hewlett-Packard Co., 1991. All Rights Reserved.
volutil: help contigvol

Description:

The CONTIGVOL command creates contiguous free disk space on a volume.
The master volume of the volume set in which this volume is a member
must be mounted in the MASTER state as displayed by the :DSTAT command.

And on my production system, (MPE/iX 5.5 PP4) I get:

:volutil

 Mirvutil A.01.00, (C) Hewlett-Packard Co., 1991. All Rights Reserved.
volutil: help contigvol

For a start, why do I get access to CONTIGVOL and you don't? And why
does my brand-newly-installed MPE/iX 6.5 on my test system still have VOLUTIL
A.01.00 ..... same as my old 5.5 system?

I've got what I want, but this would seem to need explanation.
