You haven't mentioned what kind of disk device environment you have, 
but may I suggest the following if the situation arises again ...

Before the final desperate act of rebooting, try power-resetting your 
disk subsystem.

I have seen this procedure "revive" seemingly hung jobs on more than 
one occasion.

You would still not have solved the underlying disk device problem, 
but you may overcome the specific problem at hand.

In any case, you would not be taking any risks, since you would 
otherwise be rebooting anyway.

BTW, before actually rebooting, as has been suggested earlier, a 
memory dump could certainly be useful.
