In most cases, yes the last node of the trace route should match the
gateway address in NMMGR. However, if you are using something like Cisco's
Hot Stanby Router then they may not match. The Hot Standby Router product
permits the use of a virtual IP address for the gateway, which behind the
scenes points to a number of router cards, one of which is the active
gateway for that segment.

That allows the Cisco IOS to automatically fail over to another router if
one fails without requiring all of the nodes to change thier gateway IP
address.
