You can get Enhydra from:
www.enhydra.org
And there is a good "getting started" guide at:
http://www.lutris.com/documentation/index.html
If you've already got the most recent Java (latest 1.2.2 downloadable from
Jazz) installed, then setting up Enhydra to run standalone (without begin
integrated into Apache) shouldn't be too hard. If you want to invoke it via
the jserv Apache interface, then it's probably a bit more work, but you can
get started without worrying about Apache (Enhydra can act as its own
server).
On a related note:
I'm talking with Jon Backus of the Tech Group University about teaching a
two day "Introduction to Java Applications on MPE" class at their campus in
Maryland sometime in November that will probably use Enhydra as an example.
Obviously two days is a rather short period of time to cover Java, OO
Programming, Enhydra, Web Application Architecture, etc., but the current
plan is to provide a complete overview of the technologies involved, how
they fit together, and to demonstrate the construction of a "Hello World"
type of Enhydra-based Web Application that communicates with an Image
database using local JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) on the 3000.
The students will leave with this complete application that they can take
home and run on their own 3000s as a learning tool and something they can
evolve into a real application for their organization.
The prerequisites are simply a familiarity with developing software on MPE
(in any language) and a desire to learn new things. Specifically we want
this class to provide a "bootstrapping" mechanism for traditional HP-3000
customers (and people) who are interested in things like Java/Enhydra but
don't have any idea how to get started.
Of course I'm very interested in comments as to whether this is something
people think would be valuable, and if it is something you might personally
be interested in attending.
