In the "there but for the grace of god go I" department:
From the March 11 Arizona Republic:
Computers for lottery fail all day
2300 terminals reset by hand
The Arizona Lottery's computer system failed Sunday, stopping ticket sales
statewide, after technicians installed a software program designed to
remedy a computer glitch that shut down the system 11 days earlier.
All 2300 lottery terminals across the state had to be reset manually, said
Sam Wakasugi, director of marketing for Arizona Lottery. The work of going
around to the retailers and kicking the machines started about 5 a.m.
Sunday and was expected to be completed by 9 a.m. today.
The system was taken down on purpose at midnight to add the new software,
Wakasugi said. But the terminals stayed dead after the system was brought
back online.
Lottery volunteers and workers with Automatic Wagering Inc., the company
the lottery contracts to handle its computers, set out to reboot each
terminal, Wakasugi said...
The new software corrects the glitch that scotched sales on Feb. 29. There
were no sales that day because the computers didn't recognize the leap-year
day.
Wakasugi said Arizona Lottery officials are evaluating the agency's
relationship with [Automatic Wagering, Inc.].
