Well, I've had the chat with our Support Company and the problem boils down
to us not having enough free disc space.

As I understand it:

The 12H uses Raid 1 IF there is 50% or more free space on a disc.
If this drops below 50% THEN it uses Raid 5 on that disc.

The result:

Your system suddenly starts to S L O W down due to a massive increase in
IO in the 12H.

A 'partial' cure:

Increase the amount of free space on the disc that has dropped bellow 50%
free.

A 'full' cure:

Well, we're working on that. A job that will check for this situation and
warn/correct it is being designed. It will be posted to this list when in a
'usable' state so that you can evaluate it yourself.

regards,
Robert W.Mills (Windsong Services)

Thanks to all those who replied to this.

The reason for the SQUISHER problem has been discovered. SQUISHER is being
run in the 'C' Queue by another online program and it looks as if we had
several users doing this.

The reason for the SORT problem has also been discovered. Am going to have
another chat (Tuesday AM, GMT) with our Support Company to confirm the
details. Will post them as soon as possible.

I am about ready to buy one of these 12H autoraid units for a 987SX on MPE
6.0pp2. This is a disturbing bit of news. Does anyone else have issues
like this with HP's 12 Autoraid?

Bill Titus

Subject: SQUISHER and HP's 12H AutoRaid

We had a problem when sorting files that resided on the 12H -- the system, a
979-200, ran as slow as a 918LX. A 'temporary' workaround to that problem
has been to create a Private Volume on a non-12H drive and point the sort
workfiles there.

We've now got the same performance problem when several users are running
Boeing Tech's SQUISHER to un-compress files at the same time. Does SQUISHER
use any tempory file(s) that we could get it to place on the PV instead of
the 12H? OR is there some other reason for this problem?
