I'm probably going to the "Transition Tour" here in Houston on the 14th,
and like you, even after reading your post, I don't have very high
expectations. Mainly because of that "Wheelbarrow" full of money. I know
that this migration forced on us by HP in not cheap, actually very
expensive. Additionally, after the migration (If you choose to migrate)
your TCO is going up also. Once Migrated to HP-UX, you will need a
minimum of two HP-UX boxes for each 3000 box that you currently have,
and then don't forget the extra staff require also. So when you go
shopping for that wheelbarrow, make sure you get the extended warrantee
on it, because you'll be making many trip to the CFO's office with it.

Stay on M.P.E., with 3rd party support. It's not just going to save you
money, but 10 years from now there will be many more attractive
migrations paths in front of you.

The HP "Transition Tour" made its first stop yesterday in Spokane,
Washington. I attended, but didn't have high expectations. I have
been
disappointed in the webcasts offered to date, for their lack of useful
and/or new content, and I was expecting more of the same. I was
pleasantly
surprised. I found the event to be very informative and eye-opening.
The
"Platinum Partners" who are participating in the tour have obviously
worked
hard to develop a program that is meaningful and helpful. I was also
impressed by the limited amount of self-promotion (read sales pitch) by
the
partners. I recommend this event to anyone living in or near one of
the
stops.

More importantly, I recommend that you take your boss. CIOs, and maybe
even
CFOs need to hear at least the morning sessions. If you are planning
to
migrate you will soon be walking into your CFO's office with a
wheelbarrow
and asking him/her to fill it up with money (large denominations only,
please). These sessions will help them to understand the scope of the
effort you are about to undertake. For those who intend to homestead,
this
event will help explain the effort and expense you are avoiding, thus
helping to justify your decision. For those whose companies are
dragging
their feet in the planning and funding of a migration project, this
will
help light a fire under them.

John Clogg
