I know I'm asking for a lot of information here, but here goes...................

Does anyone out there have any experience using Berkley Sockets on
the 3k to talk to an RS/6000 or a VAX? I believe the procedure is for the
systems to become "aware" of one another so that a network failure or
downtime on one system won't cause jobs to abort. A signal or message
is sent from one system to another saying "OK, I'm done with this file,
come pick it up". What is required to "pick up" the message?

Has anyone used RPC (remote procedure control?) on a foriegn host to
kick off jobs or processes on the 3k? If so, does it require anything
special to be loaded on the 3k?

What about NFS to "move" files between systems.

What else is out there that I'm not thinking of? I'll be going to HPWORLD at
the end of the month to research this further, but I need to put together
proposals well before that.

The goals: (not ambitious at all! :) )
- Timely operations alert if a job, system, or network fails
- Tracking of files as they pass from one system to another and back
- Reliability
- Automated. Must be contained within job streams. No manual
processes allowed

Thanks to one and all for any suggestions, war stories, or successful
implementations.
