Hi everyone:

Hopefully I am doing this right !

I just joined the the list, but I have been an independent consultant for
an
excess
of 22 years. As a software specialist, I chose to devote my craft to the
best
OS
at the time. This was a time where the HP3000 was the size of fridge, had
one
user and did less than some of today's cell phones. To this day, I am
still
working
on the same OS, not for any other reason but because it is still the best.

Over the last 22 years, languages have come and gone, some have even
changed
but the ever present reality throughout time has been that MPE was and
still is
the
OS of choice for businesses. Some companies have lost track of this fact
while
striving to stay with the latest technology. This statement applies to
both the
User
community and by large the vendors. While some vendors have decided to
bail
out of the MPE environment, other have chosen to stay on and make it work
for
them.

As for the statement by Ian Sargent regarding the availability of usable
applications,
I must in part disagree. I have worked on several 4th generation
languages,
Powerhouse from Cognos, Speedware and Autobahn from the Speedware
Corporation. Between the two 4gls, my vote goes to Speedware. Their
suite of
software products have been around from the beginning. At first,
Speedware
worked only on MPE, but now, it works on just about any OS (and still
MPE).
One of their latest products is Autobahn; it actually allows a user on the
web
to
interface with information on the HP3000.

I have included two quotes generally describing their Speedware/4gl and
Autobahn

for those who do not know of their products.

    Speedware/4GL & Speedware/Designer makes an application developer's
life easier and a lot more productive-it generates optimized code and
automates
many boring but necessary programming chores. The Speedware suite
includes
    Speedware/4GL, a complete, 4th-generation platform-independent
programming
language, and its CASE companion, Speedware/Designer. This complete
environment integrates application development, maintenance and
enhancement,
giving you maximum productivity for creating transaction-oriented
applications
Speedware's proven technology is platform-independent and can easily
    encompass client/server and Web environments.

Speedware Autobahn is a complete Web development environment.
It lets you create new enterprise-scale, mission-critical Web
applications
or Web-enable existing applications, and operate them in Internet,
Intranet
and Extranet environments. Speedware Autobahn is based on an n-tier
scalable application server that supports multiple Web interfaces,
including

CGI, NSAPI and ISAPI. The Speedware Autobahn graphical, client-server
development tool handles the full application development cycle,
including
prototyping, program creation, testing and maintenance.

Can anyone else add any other applications which have stood the test of
time,
or who have committed themselves to support the MPE OS for the long run. ?

Maybe the idea is to start a thread with all the applications available,
with the stipulation that it must not only be supported on the MPE OS
platform but be available to the MPE User base.
