John,

I agree with Craig and Keven, but I feel I have to add my two cents worth.

Files do not randomly disappear. If you had directory problems, you would
have other indications. If you do a LISTF @[log in to unmask]@ on the console and watch
it, you can see if you have file label corruption on your system.
Thoroughly check your system backup listing for errors. Then run logtool
and check for disk errors. If you have good file labels, good backups and
no reported disk drive or controller errors, you probably don't need to run
FSCHECK.

By the way, you should and could be doing all the things I mention above in
an automated fashion. Why waste human bandwidth on task that could be
automated.

I would start by asking, what's changed. Did something new get introduced
to the system. Is your security adequate? When was the last time you
changed your passwords? Is some rough user playing games?

Speaking of 'cents', when is the USA going to stop wasting time on pennies?
Why not just round to the nearest nickel or even dime.
