DDS-4 comes in LVD Ultra3 SCSI, it does not connect directly on a NON- A or
N class e3000. You can use DDS-2 or better yet DDS-3. The best method
would be a DLT device. You will need a FWD SCSI connection to connect
directly to one of these on a NON- A or N class machine. You can perhaps
pick up a used or refurbished HVD DLT 7000 for not too much money. The 4000
is available in SE-SCSI, but since the default definition on MPE calls for
the driver to be SCSI_TAPE2_DM, you probably cannot use this device on the
3000, you need to use a FW HVD SCSI connection for the 4000 even though the
transfer rate is in the range of the DDS-3's transfer rate.

Subject: Thinking about a new tape drive

If you have an extra SE SCSI port I would recommend using 2 drives and doing
a parallel backup. This decreases the time spent by slightly less than half.
DDS4 is not yet supported on MPE so your only choice is a DDS3.

You could at also look at a DLT which is supported. This, I believe, would
require a free FW/SCSI port. The transfer rate is 1.5 MB/PS for the 4000 and
6MB/PS for the 8000.
The initial investment is a couple hundred more but they are more reliable.
The cost of tapes is also higher but you can reuse them forever unlike DAT
media.

HTH,
