Java RMI hangs

I have a Java RMI application where an hp3000 is the client and an hp9000
the server.  When the 3000 attempts to  create a connection it hangs about
once ever 50 times.  Stopping and starting the server has no effect, the
3000 remains hung.   Does anyone know why?   This is on MPE6.0, jdk1.2.2.
