Particularly if some of those options are championed by people with
strong convictions and a strong love for their platforms. I have always
looked forward to using the absolute best in terms of available options.
I am an inveterate tinkerer. Things should be quite exciting in 10 years.

For many, many years, I enjoyed going to hp3000 Regional Users Groups
all over the world (including many visits to the Greater Houston RUG).

I recently wrote to an hp3000 colleague and friend, who asked about
Adager's decision to skip a booth (and a talk) at HP World in Los Angeles:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you have seen through the years, the main focus during my presentations
(at HP World as well as at user groups all over the world) has been to
promote hp3000 computers (in general) and their IMAGE databases (in
particular), due to the poor/lousy/non-existent "marketing" from HP
(the original creators of these wonderful systems). After 11/14/2001,
it made no sense whatsoever for me to continue talking about the wonders
of IMAGE databases.

As you have also seen through the years, we don't "market" Adager via
the Adager booth at Interex shows. We pay tens of thousands of Dollars
to Interex to have a nice quiet area (a "rest area") so that we can
talk with our friends. We realized we could do the same (and without
being restricted to "manning the booth" at all times) by simply
attending the conference and talking with people at ALL times,
everywhere. So, Adager folks will attend, as fully-paid participants.
At the rate that we paid for the Adager booth, we can have MANY people
attend the conference and we don't have to deal with setting up (and
tearing down) the booth -- two of the greatest pains in the world :-)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

>I have a theory or two myself... What would it take to get
>you to attend?

Some sign of life from HP (asking for "enthusiasm" might be a bit
excessive :-)

In the old days, when we attended hp3000 RUG meetings, there was
a lot of energy among the users (even as HP's feet-dragging became
more and more obvious). At some point, we simply got tired of
having one theme: "HP, please market your very own inventions".

Nowadays, there is a lot of (very professional and very impressive)
work being done by HP in terms of migrating MPE-Image users to other
HP platforms. HP is a multi-billion dollar company with tons of
resources. They should certainly be qualified to do this work
themselves. People in the hp3000 community, I am afraid, just
became tired of doing (what should have always been) HP's work.

This work on the part of the MPE-Image community was done at no
expense to HP. In fact, we paid a heavy price in terms of family,
health (jet lag, lousy "on the road" food with the exception
of a few great meals with friends like Denys), and so on.

If HP were to suddenly announce to the world that MPE-Image will
get the attention that they deserve (or if HP were to suddenly
announce that it will authorize MPE-Image -- Cinderella, if you
will -- to take off under the auspices of a worthy Prince), please
be sure to count me as the first volunteer to go, all over the
world, to spread the good news about MPE and IMAGE/SQL.
