hi!
i've got some questions about devctrl.mpexl.telesup and
hardware compression. we had a problem with it this weekend
and i'm wondering if we're using correctly. i had always
thought that devctrl could/should be run once (like at
system startup time) and <whatever> would stay set until
reset or the system was rebooted. is that right? or does
it <eek> need to be re-run prior to every use? and what if
a tape is mounted when using devctrl? has anyone seen
anything like this?
devctrl.mpexl.telesup 80 compression=enable
Device = 80, Compression=enable, Eject=Nochange,
Load=Nochange
Unable to establish device ownership
Subsys: 231
Error : -36
having no showdev to go with this <sigh> my suspicion is:
1) a tape was actually mounted or
2) a tape was mounted, the system was rebooted and now the
drive is in some 'quasi' (sort of mounted, sort of not)
state
(the above caused a *real* mess.... ldev 80 is one of our
dlt8000s. after 30+ hours, the operators finally aborted
the job using this device. it was backing up ~55gb and
still wasn't done <sigh>)
finally, does the tape label have any effect on whether or
not the device will use compression? that is, say a 90m (w/
media recognition) tape was labelled on a dds2 drive (no
compression).... if that tape is mounted in a dds3 drive
with h/w compression enabled -- what's the
result? - d 'really wanting a better
devctrl!'
