I remember using those things! Find the socket with a pin layout that matches
your tube, plug it in, set the big bakelite knobs to the proper settings as
indicated by the chart attached to the machine, and fire it up...
Somewhere in the garage, I'm sure, are my old Sylvania and RCA tube manuals with
cross reference charts, pinout diagrams, voltages and currents, etc. for
hundreds and hundreds of tubes. I used to build little projects (like an AM
radio transmitter) with tubes when I was a kid.

I remember going into Safeway when I was a kid. I wondered what the machine
was with all the circles on it. It was next to the front door. I found out
later it was a tube tester. All the TV and Radio tubereplacements were down
below. Now it's gone and the Safeway store with it.
