That sounds like a plan ...

Yep...there's a different core i/o card for the 9000 which also has a mux i/f.

You can use that SE port to connect the external drive. I'd shutdown the box and make sure the power to the external drive is off before connecting...make sure they have a terminator on the external drive as well as the scsi cable...

959ks400 - I have found the install manual, and it shows a SE socket on rear, and the same bus as the internal tape drive. Curiously the 9000 version seems to have a different set of interfaces on that card....

What sort of box is it, John?

Thanks for that detail, well worth having!

Another query...When we had a 928 at this site, its internal tape drive died, and we sent up an external unit, and plugged it into the scsi socket on the rear, configured it as ldev 8, and used that - on site personnel really not up to opening the case and swapping internal drives IMHO.

If this external unit is still on site (should be!), and its at least a DDS2, and if there is an SE scsi socket on the rear of the system, we should be able to plug it in there.....Looks like there are both SE and FW SCSI sockets on the back.
If the drive was ldev 8, its scsi address WONT be 0, so it wouldn't conflict.

Plugging it into a running system - would it be seen or not ? Does CSTM MAP go out and look at everything ?
Cant hurt anything if connected while powered off, then powered on ? I know have powered down external tapes , disconnected, reconnected and powered up many times before without issue.

thanks

John Pitman

John-

1) Make sure he shows up with a Torx set. ;-)
2) Make sure he does not bend any pins on the internal scsi ribbon cable.
3) SCSI ID 0 on that DDS-3 : all jumpers open

Thanks.
I am trying to avoid having to guide somebody with poor English through ODE and mapper and back out again. I hope that if they install a new drive and reboot, and can see the tape part no with same scsi address as before , it should be good. I will also get them to test reading an old tape, and writing a new one before tech leaves the scene....

John Pitman

Those aren't ldev's that cstm is showing - they're simply numerical instances.

The scsi address of ldev 7 is defintely 0 - as shown by sysgen and cstm.
