If we are going to conclude that the illegal activities mentioned by Denys
contributed to the 3K's EOL (and clearly Jeff assigns less weight than
Denys) then we also must consider the pricing policies of certain 4GL
vendors as having an even greater contribution. I'm sure there are many
new sales and system upgrades that did not occur because the licence fee
for the 4GL product was more expensive than all the hardware and the rest
of the software.

I don't know of any "diddled" systems but I have personal knowledge of 5
cases where the purchase/upgrade did not occur because of the prohibitive
cost of that one product. Considering the synergy that HP and this
particular vendor exhibited in the 80's, and then the apparent 'lack' of
synergy in the past 5-7 years, coupled with the considerably more favorable
pricing policies towards the Unix version of their product, one, with a
little more paranoia than I have, could conclude that those pricing
policies were viewed as a "tool" to hasten the 3K's EOL.

That cost CSY lots and lots of dollars that were not pumped back
into R&D. We lost headcount due to this activity. I don't know the
impact this had on the EOL of the 3000 (it could not have helped,
IMO), but my guess is that the 3000 EOL would have occurred anyways.

Sadly...
