To play devil's advocate, the beast had been up and running, rather
reliably, for months prior to this; but a 'vendor requirement'
necessitated the move (or attempt thereof) to 11.0. It does a
reasonable job once you get it properly tweaked and leave it alone.

Posix is a piece of cake in contrast.

I did :-) Until early evening, then had dinner, and back for more
sleep, and now up again (at least temporarily). The frustration level
was just too high and we needed a break.

Amen. And I failed to mention that assuming we get Oracle back up,
we have to recompile *everything* that touches Oracle.

We abandoned all of the student system except for fee payment, student
receivables, and financial aid (the high-maintenance items that always
run a race to keep up with government regulations). The other 90% of
our student support systems are still on MPE (thank goodness).

We had two very competent HP engineers the first day. Not Bill Hassel
mind you but certainly no slouches either.

I think they were as aggravated as we were :-) The users certainly got
a taste of it Monday morning when we expected to be long-since finished
with the upgrade.

We know some kernel parms were out of whack. In retrospect, some of the
other problems may have been in LD_LIBRARY path. But that isn't all.
There are just too many 'fix it and forget it' magic incantations to get
the thing going to remember them all.

Were it not for the proximity to HPWorld, I'd be seeing my travel agent
:-)
