I have avoided this thread because I agree it had become silly some time ago. I want to comment on Denys' assertion that the HP3000 "doesn't do much". In a sense, this is what this thread is about. Yes there are lots of bells and whistles that the HP3000 doesn't support, and that is by design, since those features do not fit in with the 3000's role as an OLTP business machine. There are other capabilities, however, that are missing because HP appears not to give development efforts as much priority on the 3000 as the 9000. Specifically, development of drivers for new storage devices and interfaces (e.g., ultra SCSI, fiber channel) have always lagged behind the HPUX boxes.

If HP regarded the HP3000 as a flagship product, they would presumably demonstrate that fact by keeping the product up to date. It is that disparity between the two product lines that fuels users' fears that HP is abandoning the platform even when new features are being added at a furious pace. The slogan thread is as much about keeping the 3000 in the minds of HP's management as winning customers.
