Socrates told his persecutors (prior to their executing him for
refusing to profess a belief in God) that neither they nor he knew
there was a God but that he differed from them in knowing that he
didn't know.

Neither Wirt nor I are atheists. We are agnostics.

Theists (of all sects) believe in the existence of a God (without any
proof). Atheists believe in the non-existence of a God (without any
proof). Agnostics (like Socrates) acknowledge that (in the absence of a
proof in either direction) they simply don't know one way or the other.
