Three pins are plenty for the hardwired connection assuming you're using
an HP printer or someone else's that doesn't require that modem control
signals be present. Some of those cheapo printers out there will require
that you force a few signals (i.e. dtr, cts, dcd) but even these can be
handled by tying a few pins together on the printer end.
 
For those HP printers the cable would be:
 
                   ATP           printer
 
                    2 ------------- 2
                    3 ------------- 3
                    1 ------------- 7
 
                 3-pin            DB25
 
Do yourself a favor and don't use the default termtype 19 for HPLPATP..
it times out too quick when the classic (you did say ATP) system gets
busy. My favorite for performance is TTPLC26 which won't slow the printer
down with a lot of enqing and acking. If you don't want to re-configure
parity on existing printers, TT21 acts like a laid back version of TT19.
